The Danger of Carrying Yesterday Into Tomorrow

Most leaders enter ministry knowing there will be challenges.

They expect long hours, difficult decisions, and seasons that test their faith. What often catches leaders by surprise are the disappointments that cut deeper than expected.

A trusted team member walks away. A family you invested years in suddenly leaves. A ministry effort you poured your heart into falls short. Sometimes the criticism is unfair. Sometimes the outcome feels confusing. Sometimes the weight simply accumulates over time.

Those moments can leave leaders carrying more than disappointment. They can leave leaders carrying doubt. Not doubt in God, but doubt in people. Doubt in opportunities. Doubt that the next season will be any different than the last.

That is often where cynicism begins.

Few leaders choose cynicism. It quietly grows when disappointment goes unaddressed. It convinces us to lower our expectations, protect ourselves from future hurt, and assume tomorrow will look like yesterday.

That is what makes this week's conversation so important.

Carey Nieuwhof shares a deeply personal leadership lesson about the subtle ways disappointment can shape us and the practices that help leaders remain hopeful, faithful, and open to what God wants to do next.

As Romans 15:13 reminds us, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him."

Disappointment may be part of ministry, but cynicism does not have to be. God is still at work, still faithful, and still writing stories we cannot yet see.

Has disappointment changed the way you lead?

Watch this insightful conversation on one of the most overlooked leadership challenges and how to remain hopeful and effective through it.

In This Episode Your Team Will Learn

Discussion Questions

  • How have past disappointments influenced the way I lead today?

  • Where am I tempted to become more skeptical than hopeful?

  • What helps me remain open to what God wants to do next?

  • How can our team cultivate greater trust, resilience, and hope?

Ministry will always involve risk because people matter deeply.

The good news is that disappointment does not have to define your leadership. God is still at work, still shaping His Church, and still inviting us to lead with faith, hope, and love. Stay open to what He wants to do next.
